Mariah Carey is an American musician involved in the genres of R&B, pop, and soul. She is a renowned singer, songwriter, producer and an actress. Most of her songs are based on the subject of love; however she has also written songs about racism, death, spirituality, Christmas, and songs inspiring hope. She claims that most of her songs are partly autobiographical. She debuted in 1990 with a self titled album, which sold seventeen million copies worldwide. The album contained four Billboard number-one singles and spent eleven weeks at the top of the Billboard 200.
Her follow up albums ‘Emotions’ (1991_, ‘Music Box’ (1993), ‘Merry Christmas’ (1994), ‘Daydream’ (1995), ‘Butterfly’ (1997), ‘Rainbow’ (1999), ‘Glitter’ (2001), and ‘Charmbracelet’ (2002) were equally successful and belted out chart topping numbers. Her 2005 release ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’ debuted at the peak position on US Billboard charts and was certified six times platinum by the RIAA. The album was nominated for eight Grammy’s and won three awards including “Best Contemporary R&B Album”, “Female R&B Vocal Performance”, and “Best R&B Song”. The tracks ‘We Belong Together’, ‘Don't Forget about Us’ , ‘Shake it Off’, and ‘Can I Get Your Number’ received a large amount of radio play and grew immensely in popularity.
In 2000, Carey was proclaimed as the best-selling female artist of all time at the World Music Awards. Well noted for her vocal range and technical abilities, Mariah Carey has also starred in movies such as ‘Glitter’ and Wise girls’. Carey has won numerous awards including “Soul Train Music Awards”, “American Music Awards”, “Billboard Music Awards”, “MTV Europe Music Awards”, “Teen Choice Awards”, and “Total Request Live” awards among others. She was the first female to be awarded the Diamond award at the World Music Award and also won the Special Award for World's Best-Selling Female Artist of the Millennium form the same. |
