The original commercial truck to be designed and manufactured by Toyota was the 1935 G1, weighing 1.5 tons. Since then, Toyota has redesigned the truck numerous times reaching near perfection in the latest 2005 edition. The truck is based on the 4.0 liter DOHC EFI V6-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Timing and the Intelligence VVTi technology to churn out 245 horsepower @ 5200 rpm. The name Tacoma is derived from an Indian word meaning â??Mount Rainierâ??. The Tacoma was updated in 2005 using the latest Land Cruiser Prado Chassis as the base skeleton. It has two variants; one uses a six-speed manual transmission and the other a five-speed automatic transmission. It is rated to tow a maximum load of 6,500 pounds. Safety features include anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assists, Vehicular skid control, and dual-stage passenger airbags. The four-wheel power-train drive is accompanied by a Downhill Assist Control and a Hill-start Assist Control. An advanced tire-pressure-monitoring system was implemented on models launched since 2006. The Tacoma is available in three editions: a Regular cab, the Access cab with rear-hinged half-doors and a Double Cab with four front-hinged conventional doors. All three editions have an 8-foot bed to carry the payload. The interiors differ across the three models, with choices between front bench seat, bucket seats, or sport seating. Additionally, the Access cab edition has two tumble-flat seats. The Double Cab edition features a 3-passenger, 60/40-split tumble-and-fold rear seat. The Tacoma was rated as the Truck of the Year for 2005 by Motor Trend magazine, apart from winning the Canadian Car of the Year â?? â??Best New Pick-upâ?? award.
