About Aircraft

Aircraft were first used in a commercial perspective during World War I. The real advantages of passenger and cargo planes were realized when nations needed a quick and efficient way to transport troops and supplies to the front line. Then in 1918, the United States first started their Air Mail service. Since then airplanes have become the fastest way to travel long distances and ship goods.Airplanes do have a major drawback though. Many miles of runway are needed for airplanes to both take off and land and there is often need for aircrafts that can land on small areas. The helicopter takes over where the airplane cannot go.The concept of the helicopter was first envisioned by inventor Leonardo da Vinci in the 16th century. Da Vinci had in mind the possibilities of rotor-propelled machines, but lacked the appropriate propulsion system. It wasn't until the early 20th century that the dream of the helicopter was realized.Between 1900 and 1940, a few different kinds of helicopters were designed. Some of them even made it into the air. It wasn't until Igor Sikorsky developed his version of the helicopter that it became a viable method of transportation. Sikorsky's VS-300 helicopter has become the basis for all modern helicopters. We now are able to use helicopters efficiently for rescue operations and to provide aid to troubled regions and countries. For example, helicopters can land in very small spaces to rush patients to hospitals, thereby saving countless lives.
