Airstream Trailer Company was founded in 1936 and went on to become one of America's most successful travel-trailer companies. The founder, Wally Byam, wanted to start a company that would design and build travel trailers that would be light enough so they could be towed by just about any kind of automobile. The objective was to design a travel trailer that moved like a stream of air. The first Airstream trailer was named the Clipper. Its classic design was patterned after the aircraft of the time. It had a riveted aluminum frame, its own water supply, electric lights, and air conditioning. It could also sleep four, but the most impressive thing was it was tall enough so travelers could actually stand up in it. The Clipper was a hit and Airstream trailers quickly became American icons. There are even several museum exhibits dedicated to Airstream trailers. Airstreams are also prominently featured at NASA and in the movies. In 1970, Airstream created its first motor home. It was called the Classic and it had the same riveted aluminum styling as the company's travel trailers. Airstream has continued to add to its product line, but all of their trailers and motor homes have the same classic look. Airstreams are very durable. Plus, they have a timeless design that never goes out of style. Some people even prefer to purchase a used Airstream instead of buying a brand new RV. |
