About Aviation

George Cayley is generally viewed as the father of aviation because he was the first person to understand the principles of flight. Cayley, an Englishman, developed and flew a small model glider in 1804, 99 years before the first self-propelled plane would make it into the air. Cayley was a proficient essayist and published his studies on aerodynamics in a series of three papers. In these papers, he identified his theories on lift. These three papers are viewed as some of the most important documents in aviation.Otto Lilienthal is also considered another great in the history of aviation. Lilienthal developed ideas that drew on the curvature of a bird's wings. He stressed that the shape of a bird's wings was the secret for lift. His book Birdflight as the Basis for Aviation was used by the Wright Brothers as a guide for creating their self-propelled aircraft. Lilienthal created many different kinds of gliders while conducting his research and writing papers. It wasn't until two brothers in North Carolina took the next step that aviation really progressed. In 1903, the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, flew the first manned, self-powered, heavier-than-air aircraft. The flight lasted 12 seconds and the plane flew 100 yards. They took many more flights that day and one flight almost lasted a full minute. That day changed aviation forever.Resting on the backs of these aviation giants, we have been able to create some extraordinary machines. The United States military has benefited greatly for the aviation industry, which has provided them with some of their most efficient weapons yet. In June 1981, one of the most intriguing aviation breakthroughs took flight. F-117 Nighthawk, the first stealth aircraft, was the first in a long line of stealth airplanes. Since then, stealth aircraft have gained an important place in the U.S. Air Force fleet.
