Worldâs largest automobile manufacturer, General Motors, was founded in 1908. Currently, headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, USA, the company manufactures and sells automobiles such as a cars and pickup trucks, under various brand names such as Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, Hummer, Oldsmobile (now shut operations), Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, and Vauxhall. The all terrain Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) called as the HumVee or Hummer V derives its name from the acronym, High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). The original concept vehicle was manufactured for pure military applications; the later variants were introduced for general civilian usage. The third edition of the HumVee, the Hummer H3 was launched by the General Motorsâ Hummer division, in 2005. It has the smallest chassis among all the three editions. It was designed and built in GMâs Shreveport, Louisiana factory. The H3 derives its power from a 3.5 Liter straight-5 Atlas engine with an engine displacement of 3464 cc. The 20 valve DOHC unit churns out 220 BHP at 5,600 RPM. It can generate 225 ftâ¢lbf (305 Nâ¢m) of torque at 2,800 RPM. The engine transmission features two way gearboxes. A 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission kit is pre-installed in the vehicle. In addition, it also features the famed GMâs Stabilitrak vehicle stability control. The drive train sports an electronically-controlled dual-speed transfer case and electronic locking differential. It weighs in at 8,500 lbs and can deliver a fuel economy of 16 miles per gallon while driving in the city. On the highway, it can cover 20 miles per gallon when using manual gear-shifts and 19 miles per gallon with the automatic gearshifts. It is structured to withstand watery depths of as much as 24 inches. |
