About Toyota Supra

Toyota launched the first series of sports cars titled â??Supraâ?? in 1979. The model was a design continuing the legacy of the Toyota Celica Supra. In 1986, Toyota converted the Toyota Celica Supra model to a separate line-up of its own, detaching the â??Celicaâ?? name tag from the brand name. The Supra was based on an upgraded version of the Toyota 2000GT engine. The initial three editions used a modified inline 6-cylinder 2000GT M engine. The name â??Supraâ??, Latin for ''over, above, or beyond '', coupled with the Latin word â??Celicaâ?? meaning ''celestial'' or ''from the heavens'', stands for â??from above the heavensâ??. The name connotes the high performance engineering implemented into the Supra series. The first edition, basically designed like a Celica, was about 5 inches longer and had an inline-6 engine instead of the older Celica's 4-cylinder engine. The USA edition utilized a 110 HP, 2.6 L / 2563 cc 12-valve SOHC inline-6 4M-E engine. The Japanese, on the other hand, was based on an equally powerful 12-valve SOHC inline-6 M-EU engine with a smaller displacement of 2 Liters churning out 110 HP. The respective engines were the first Toyota engines to use electronic fuel injection system. They also offered two variants in each class; different drivetrain options were either a manual 5-speed transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic transmission. Supra had 4-wheel disk brakes as standard attachments, besides a four-link rear suspension with coil springs, lateral track bar, and stabilizer bar. The front suspension comprised of a MacPherson strut suspension and stabilizer bar. A variant comprising of a 2.0 L / 1988 cc, SOHC 12-valve Turbocharged inline-6 M-TEU engine churning out 145 HP was introduced in 1980 in the Japanese markets followed by Garrett T03 Turbo. This edition was the first Toyota car ever to use a turbocharger.
