The term utility trailer is typically used to refer to lightweight trailers capable of hauling a variety of cargo. However, utility trailer can also be used as a generic term for trailers that are used for specific purposes and, in these instances, are typically designated by the type of goods they are intended to transport (e.g., car haulers), or by their style (e.g., flatbed trailers). Utility trailers exist for a variety of towing vehicles, including motorcycles, cars, small trucks, and SUVs. Utility trailers can, of course, be purchased new or used or even constructed from self-assembly kits. Since there are many types of utility trailers, one way to find the correct trailer for your needs is to determine first what type of cargo you will need to transport and under what circumstances. Identify any special issues you will face. For example, if you need to transport a motorcycle, you may look into utility trailers designed especially to transport motorcycles. Next, consider whether you will need to load and unload the transported items by yourself, what type of vehicle you will be using to tow the trailer, and how you will secure the transported items. Will you need to be able to fold up and store the trailer once you have reached your destination? Running through a checklist of each procedure that will be involved in getting the items to their destination (including the kind of terrain and weather you will encounter) and using them there will help you determine if you need an enclosed trailer, whether you will need wheel chocks to hold the vehicle wheels in place, and so on. Also be sure to check your tow vehicle's maximum towing capacity. Finally, you will need to purchase trailer hitch. You may purchase and install one yourself or you may go to a professional and get one installed for you. |
