Even before OJ Simpson, the Ford Bronco was an iconic automobile. It was introduced by Ford in the 1960s as a competitor in the off-road 4x4 category which was dominated by other brands. It was later increased in size and built on the Ford F-series truck chassis and became one of the first Sport Utility Vehicles before the category even existed. Throughout its history, the Bronco was available in small and large sizes with the small size being based on Ford's Ranger pick-up. The Broncos shared many parts with the F-series trucks and the Ranger trucks respectively so parts were easily obtainable. The late 1980s saw the introduction of fuel injection to the Bronco line which helped it overcome power and fuel efficiency deficiencies. From the late 1980s to the late 1990s, the Bronco remained essentially unchanged except for the improvement of interior creature comforts. In 1997, and post-OJ, Ford changed the name of the Bronco and sent it through a redesign. The new, large Bronco was to be called the Ford Expedition and went on to be one of Ford's best sellers. The small Bronco became the Explorer. Parts Availability Is One of the Bronco's Best Features |
