The best way to save money on tires is to buy them in advance of a 'side of the road' emergency. If you discover a flat on a Tuesday morning and you've got places to be, you'll most likely end up spending top dollar. A rock and a hard place is not a good position from which to bargain.Though some tires are designed to 'go the long run' and last up to 100 thousand miles, a typical set of tires will last between 40 and 60 thousand miles. How can you tell how yours are doing? By looking at the 'tread wear indicators' on your tires.Kneel down and check 'em out. Buried in your tire's tread are what are known as 'wear bars.' When the treads get as low as these wear bars, your tires have officially and legally worn out. Chances are you have noticed a difference in how they're handling. But, whether you're noticed any difference or not is beside the point. If the tread is anywhere close to the wear bars, now is the last possible 'good' time you're going to have to find tires cheaply. Experts recommend buying within a single family of tires. This is not for consumer loyalty purposes, but rather because tires from the same family work the best together. At any rate, never mix and match tires from different seasons, or with different speed capabilities. It is always preferable to have all four tires from the same brand, the same grade, the same model, and the same rating. The only exception to this rule is some high-performance sports cars which actually have different wheel types in the front and back.
