About Lincoln Continental

American Ford Motor Company launched their first line-up of luxury cars titled, the 'Lincoln.' The Lincoln series was heralded by the Lincoln Continental model designed in 1938 by chief stylist Bob Gregorie as Edsel Ford's unique personal automobile. This personal vehicle was supposed to be used for Ford's March 1939 vacation, leading to accentuated interest by his high-society, close friends. Considering a business opportunity, Ford ordered further production of a thousand samples in both convertible as a well as the regular sedan designs. Each piece was hand-crafted with 24 models of the 1939 editions and 400 of the 1940 editions having hand-hammered body panels. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the suspended production was re-initiated between 1946 and 1948. The Lincoln Continental model, manufactured between 1939 and 1948, is one of the only cars to be recognized as a 'Full Classic' by the Class Car Club of America. The name tag was revived in 1955 as the Continental Mark II, a high-class luxury car, was continued in production for two years with 3,000 units built. The Mark II is stated to be holding the title for the highest quality control in the automobile industry. Some of the prominent personalities of the times owning the Mark II were Elvis, the Shah of Iran, Nelson Rockefeller, Henry Kissinger, etc. The series was followed up by a 1958 model, the Continental Mark III, a state-of-the-art edition of the times. Elwood Engle revamped the entire design, originally intended to be christened the Ford Thunderbird, and created the 1961 edition. Later editions saw little or no modification except for the change in front grill design to a simpler floating rectangle with a thinner centre bar. A modified two-door Lincoln was launched in 1966 with the 7.6 L MEL engine. The last Lincoln Continental was manufactured at the Wixom Assembly Plant on July 26, 2002.
