Rims are technically the same thing as wheels, though cultural connotations are applied to them somewhat differently. Rims, or wheels, are the hubs around which the tires are attached and which connect to a car's axles providing stability and steering control. The term 'rims' has come to represent a flashy set in slang terminology, while the term 'wheels' is often used to refer to an entire car. Rims have attained a cultural significance far beyond their mechanical usage and decorative flair. Rims are often viewed as a status symbol. This somewhat misplaced idea can be viewed in its most extreme form when older, less expensive cars are seen driving around with rims that are worth more than the car itself. There is a vast array of decorative rim styles available, from the classic five-stars to new favorites like spinning rims. They also come in a wide range of colors and finishes, from gun metal and polished silver to black, gold, and most automotive powder-coat colors. Many rims providers can even match your car's paint to your rims. Rims do not have to be flashy and expensive, however. Some people just need a new set of standard-issue rims or just one rim to replace a damaged one. Many auto shops can repair a single bent rim for much less than the price of a new one. If you are really looking to save money, you can pick up rims in poor condition and have them repaired and refinished for less than the price of a new set. |
