About Automobile

The discovery of the wheel is undisputedly considered one of the great inventions in history, helping mankind perform previously impossible tasks. Probably, the best application of the wheel has been the invention of different modes of transport, the most important being the automobile. An automobile is a vehicle mounted on four wheels running with a built-in motor, which includes cars, vans, buses, and trucks. The self-powered road vehicle we know today had its birth in 1769 in the form of a military tractor running with a steam engine, designed by a French engineer, Nicolas Cugnot. However, steam engines were not efficient and made the vehicle very heavy. The first vehicle incorporating the gasoline internal combustion engine, which powers all road vehicles today, was invented by Karl Benz in Mannheim in 1885, closely followed by models designed by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Britain's pioneering petrol powered automobiles were created by Frederick Lanchester, who also invented the disc brake. The first company dedicated to automobile manufacturing was Panhard et Levassor, founded in 1889, in France, followed by Peugeot in 1891. The beginning of the twentieth century saw mass production of motor vehicles in France and the United States, with the Duryea Motor Wagon Company becoming the first American automobile company, setting the trend for many more companies and new technologies across the globe. Today, automobile companies such as General Motors, Mercedes Benz, Honda, Ford, and Ferrari among others launch state-of-the-art vehicles incorporating direct fuel injection, V6 engines, aerodynamic contours, high traction tyres, and computer controls to generate incredible speeds and maneuverability. The safety factor has not been ignored with foolproof measures such as crash bags, reinforced bodies, and powerful brakes being implemented. All modern cars are have environment-friendly engines, and are required to pass strict international emission standards. In addition, to conserve fast depleting conventional fuel reserves, alternative fuels like biodiesel, ethanol, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas, and even electricity are being considered in an effort to ensure a bright future for the industry.
