Dodge Neon, Chrysler Neon, Dodge SX 2.0, Plymouth Neon are all variant names of the same compact car built under DaimlerChrysler's Dodge and Plymouth brands on a FF PL platform. The compact car was marketed in the United States and Canada as a Dodge and Plymouth, and as Chrysler Neon outside North America. A successor of the Dodge Colt and Shadow, this front wheel drive compact car, introduced in 1995, was available as a 4-door sedan or 2-door coupe . A 2.0 L A588 I4 or 2.0 L 420A I4 engine powers the Neon, and it is available in 3-speed automatic transmission or 5- speed manual transmission editions. The car is equipped with big rear seats, roomy interiors and immense storage space. The rear seats exhibit a 60/40 split and an easy fold-down mechanism enabling transport of long objects, while the 63/37 front /rear weight distribution gives it good adherence in the snow. Optional side airbags are also available. Throughout its evolution, the compact car was available in many different versions such as the award-winning SRT-4, a turbocharged Dodge introduced in 2003. Dodge SRT-4 is the second-quickest car in the Dodge genre, second only to Dodge Viper. A rear spoiler on both the SRT-4 and R/T versions enhances the sporty look of the cars. The SE and the LX versions were made available in the Australian market. The year 1999 marked the end of the first generation of the Neon, while 2000 was the beginning of the second generation, with a few refinements. In 2006, the Neon was discontinued and replaced by Dodge Caliber based on the GS platform under Chrysler/ Mitsubishi Motors.
