About Fiat 126

The Fiat 126 is a 2 cylinder city-car launched in 1972 at the Turin Motor Show. The Fiat 126 was a replacement for the Fiat 500. Though the chassis was similar to that of the Fiat 500, the engine was redesigned and the size was increased to 594cc. Introduced as a front wheel drive in 1972, the Fiat 126 changed to rear wheel drive in the next year itself. The 126 had a larger wheel base of 72.501 inches (1841.5 mm) and was mechanically identical to its predecessor. With the increased size of engine, the Fiat 126 could produce 23BHP (16.9 kW) at 4800 RPM and had a four-speed manual transmission. In 1975, the license of manufacturing the Fiat 126 was given to Fabryka Samochodow Malolitrazowych (FSM), a Polish firm, which eventually became the source of every Fiat 126 produced as Italy stopped producing the 126. The first major upgrades took place in 1976, when the 126 Personal was released with a redesigned trim that included plastic bumpers, plastic rubbing strips, different mirrors, etc. The following year, in 1977, the engine size was increased to 652cc; however the Fiat 126 with 594cc engine was produced till 1978. In 1987, a new water cooled engine with an increased size of 704cc was fitted horizontally in the Fiat 126. This change gave the user more luggage space, which made the Fiat 126 more useful. In 1993, Fiat launched the Fiat Cinquecento as the successor to the Fiat 126. The next year, Fiat brought about certain changes in the trim and some body parts of the 126 but this did not give a push to the sales of the 126. Finally in 2000, the production of the Fiat 126 ended and the limited version of yellow FSM 126 was called the 'Happy End' series.
