About Fiat 850

Fiat S.p.A. is a European automobile manufacturing company founded by Giovanni Agnelli, in 1899. The name of the company, FIAT, stands for Fabbrica Italiana Automobile Torino, roughly meaning the Italian Car Factory of Turin. During the period of 1955 to 1969, Fiat manufactured a super-mini series of car named as the Fiat 600. This highly popular car led to the development of a high performance variant, christened the Fiat 850. The Fiat 850 was the successor to Fiat's first rear-engined, rear wheel drive car of very small dimensions. It was manufactured between the years 1964 and 1973. The car was internally named as Project 100G, after the Fiat 600's code name ' Project 100. The Letter 'G' connoted the Italian word Grande, meaning 'big'. The 850 was based upon the Fait 600 engine with a maximum displacement of 843 cc. It was launched in two different editions - normale and super. The normale edition was based on a 34 HP engine and the super edition was based on 37 HP engine. The maximum speed of either edition was 125 km per hour. The first Coupe was launched in the year 1965 in the Geneva Motor Show and was built around an 843 cm³ engine that churned out 47 HP. It had a top speed of 135 Km per hour. The following version, Fiat 850 Spider, was designed as a sporty two-seater with the original 843 cm³ engine capable of producing 49 HP, with a top speed of 145 km per hour. It had a convenient folding roof section tucked away under the rear flap. This edition was designed by the famous design studio Bertone. An upgraded version of 850 sedan was released in 1968 with a tweaked 47 HP engine, front disc brakes, sport steering wheel and improved trim lines.
