About Firebird

Taken from a Native American legend, the Firebird is one of the most legendary muscle cars ever produced. The most recognizable of all Pontiacs, the Firebird single-handedly equated this GM brand with power and acceleration, a reputation that still exists today. Invented in 1967, the Firebird didn't really come into its own until 1970, when the Second Generation Firebirds were unveiled. This is one of the muscle cars we associate most with the 1970s. The large engine, leather seats, and design just scream for bell-bottoms, afros, and wide lapels. It is this inextricable link to an era long past which has cemented a bit of automotive romanticism to this vehicle. Several engines were available for Second Generation Firebirds, ranging from a 250 hp V6 to a 400 hp V-8.Building upon past successes, Pontiac unveiled the Trans Am, an aggressively-styled Firebird. What set the Trans Am apart from other Firebirds was the large decal of a flamed bird, which covered nearly the entire hood and was dubbed 'The Screaming Chicken.' This design move helped usher in immorality for the Firebird brand, as it was wildly popular with consumers.Today, it's not hard to find Firebird convertibles and hardtops on the street, both in Formula and Trans Am models. Although the designs have changed in the past 30 years, the recipe for Firebird design has remained the same: put plenty of power under the hood, make the engine reliable, and evoke a feeling of exhilaration.
