Since the 1960s, the Falcon series of cars have been designed and manufactured by the Australian division of Ford. This car series is still the most preferred and favored car series in Australia and is currently manufactured only in the continent of Australia. With over 4 million units including its numerous versions designed till date, the car has been available in sedan, station wagon, panel van, and the recently designed and developed Ute (US for pickup trucks) versions. The Falcon series remains the top choice for conversion to taxi cabs and police vehicles in Australia and New Zealand. For manufacturing the North American Ford Falcon car locally, Ford started its own manufacturing plant in 1959 by setting up a new factory at a suburb in Melbourne called as Broadmeadows. The first locally manufactured Ford Falcon was sold from September 1960, called as the XK. The XK was the right handed version of its North American model. In 1962, a heavier suspension system was introduced in the XL model. This model was soon followed by the 1964 Ford Falcon XM, built upon a body designed solely in Australia. It was awarded 'Car of the Year' award by Wheels magazine in the year 1965. The Falcon has proved to be Australia's favorite racing vehicles of all time. It still remains the basic car for all premier touring car racing categories undertaken in Australia. A highly customized and tweaked version, capable of high performance, was built following Bathurst Enduro's race performance. The car was available in several different variations. The top end GT variant was based upon a 5.8 L (351 cubic inch) Canadian-made Windsor V8 engine churning out 291 HP. The GT car still is a valuable collector's item. |
