About Lincoln Continental 1961

The Lincoln Continental is an automobile model manufactured by the Lincoln division of the Ford Motor Company. The Lincoln line produces a range of luxury cars. The Lincoln Continental was developed initially as one of Edsel Ford's personal vehicles. It was designed by chief designer Bob Gregorie for Edsel's March vacation, in 1938. Seeing how popular and successful the vehicle had become Edsel decided to put the Lincoln Continental on the production line. The year 1961 saw designer Elwood Engle completely redesign the Continental. The most recognizable feature of the new Continental was its size. It was almost two feet shorter than previous models. The 1961 Continental was a unibody design, due to which the car had front opening rear doors. This door style came to be known as the 'suicide door', which became one of the most recognizable features of the Lincoln's during the 1960s. All the vehicles were manufactured in four door models and two versions the sedan and the convertible were available. The 1961 Lincoln model was the first cars to be manufactured which offered a 24,000 mile or 2 year bumper to bumper warranty. The Lincoln had a V8, 7L engine which produced 300 BHP at 4100 RPM. Its HP to weight ratio was 16.4 LB/HP and compression ratio was 10.0:1. The 1961 Lincoln Continental was 212.401 inches long and had a 123 inch wheelbase. It was a rear wheel drive vehicle with its engine located in the front. The Lincoln Continental weighed 4930 lbs.
