About Lotus

The Lotus Engineering Limited Company was started by a maverick British entrepreneur named Colin Chapman in the early 1950s. Chapman loved racing, and he involved Lotus in Formula One competitions for decades. Indeed, Lotus cars and parts have been used almost constantly in Formula One races from 1958 until the present.Chapman prided himself on creating lightweight cars with performance enhanced engine parts. His later marquee car, the De Lorean, never quite caught on with the general public. Four years after Chapman died, in 1986, GM bought the company. Seven years later, GM sold Lotus to a Malaysian car company called Proton, a full spectrum engineering firm and performance parts manufacturer.Proton broke Lotus up into two different groups: Lotus Engineering and Lotus Cars. In 2000, the Lotus Elise was released to wide acclaim. This innovative machine contained a body made of composite materials and a frame filled with extruded aluminum. The Elise made its debut in the United States sporting a Toyota engine to reduce emissions. One of the most famous Lotus cars to make it to market was the Lotus Elan, which was first released in the 1960s and then again in 1989. The Elan was a fiberglass body car with a tempered steel frame. Although the Lotus Elan was an extremely well made car, it spawned design ideas for an even more popular vehicle, the Mazda Miata. The 1989 Elan wasn't as successful as its earlier run, partly because the new car was made of heavier materials. Still, the '89 Elan sported a very powerful turbocharger. Also popular is the Lotus Esprit.
