About Maserati

The renowned Maserati racing cars have won prestigious races the world over. The company was founded in 1914 by one of seven Maserati brothers, Alfieri Maserati. Although Alfieri was the top dog, he involved his brothers (Ernesto, Ettore, Bindo, and three others) in both the business and engineering aspects. When Alfieri passed away in the early 1930s, his brothers continued to run the show. The Maserati emblem, the trident, was designed by the one brother who wasn't technically a car engineer. In 1937, the Maseratis sold off their share of the company to another Italian family, the Orsi family. The company was able to stand up to huge big-name German automakers, like Mercedes and Auto Union. In 1940 and 1941, Maseratis won the prestigious Indianapolis 500 race.During World War II, the Maserati Company shut down to help Italy prepare for battle. After the war, another Italian company, called Fiat, bought out control of Maserati. Over time, General Motors acquired Maserati and then returned it to Fiat's control in 2005. Finally, the company was sold off to the heirs of the Benetton family fortune for $2.6 billion.Over the years, Maserati cars have defined the height of sports car luxury power. Older models and used Maseratis, like the Ghibil and the Biturbo, remain quite popular. Recently produced models include the Maserati Spyder, the Coupe, the and the luxury Quattroporte. The world-famous Maserati MC-12 now sells on the U.S. streets for almost $750,000. The MC-12 is a counterpart to the world famous Ferrari Enzo supercar.
