From cork manufacturers in Hiroshima, Japan to one of the largest manufacturers of commercial and passenger vehicles, Mazda motors were first seen in the United States in 1970. In 1989, Mazda unveiled the MX-5, more popularly known as the Mazda Miata, at the Chicago Auto Fair in February. Built to be a small roadster, the first Miata was a light-weight sports car. After winning the 'All Stars' award from Automobile magazine seven years in a row, Mazda released its 2nd generation of the Mazda Miata in 1998. Compared to the first series, most of the parts were different in the 2nd generation Miatas. Slightly wider and more aerodynamic, the new models added fixed headlights instead of the first model's retractable headlights. Miatas are extensively used in street races and are a favorite with car customizers. In 2004, the Mazda Speed Miata was introduced. With added features such as a special suspension, upgraded transmission and clutch assemblies, Racing Hart 17 inch wheels, special interior trim, special exterior paint, and other features, only a small number of Speed Miatas were produced and sold. In addition to manufacturing cars, Mazda was the first vehicle manufacturer to be a title sponsor of Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca, a leading motor sports facility. Mazda parts and accessories are also separately available depending on the model and its setback. |
