About Mini

The Mini is a popular British car which was originally produced in 1959. At first a small subsidiary of the British Motor Corp. (BMC), the Mini broke out of the traditional 'large car' mold and excited consumers about small cars. The prototype Mini was dubbed the 'orange box' because of its subframe. The Mini flip-flopped the location of its carburetor, putting it in back instead of up front. The first Mini project, known as the Austin 7 (later the Austin 850 and the Morris 850) surprised and delighted consumers, who were growing tired of inflated gas guzzling machines. Despite the Mini's compact appearance, the car was able to rev up to speeds approaching 90 mph (a rather revolutionary engineering feat at the time). In fact, the Mini was so fast that engineers had to tinker with the gearbox to slow the car down to 60 mph.In another unusual move, Mini engineers used rubber cones instead of metal springs in the suspension. In 1962, the Mini really broke out into the mainstream with the Austin Mini Cooper and the Morris Mini Cooper. These cars were based an a marvelous engine, which boasted nearly 1,000 horsepower. (Race car operators quickly integrated this engine's technology into their own designs.) One year later, in 1963, the Mini Cooper S came out. This car featured bigger disc brakes and an even more powerful engine. After a successful 41 year run, the original Mini was replaced by the 'new Mini' in 2001. This was an unusual time to release a small car--the height of the SUV big truck craze. However, the Mini's unique, snarky advertising campaign appealed to Gen X drivers who were fed up with the trendiness of SUVs. Some argue that Minis enjoy a bigger presence now than they did during their heyday in the '60s. In fact, today you'll find used Minis, Mini Coopers, and Mini convertibles all over the road.
