About Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi is Japan's fourth-largest manufacturer of automobiles and trucks. The Mitsubishi Auto Company is actually part of a much larger Mitsubishi conglomerate organization, which controls over 29 major companies and countless smaller ones. The Mitsubishi Group, as it is known, began as a shipping company in 1870 and quickly evolved into an insurance, trade, banking, coal mining, and automotive manufacturing powerhouse. In the 1970s, Mitsubishi aligned itself with DaimlerChrysler. This union initially proved fruitful, and the German and Japanese auto manufacturers introduced one another to key markets. Unfortunately for Mitsubishi, DaimlerChrysler recently sold all of its stock and holdings in the Japanese entity. In 2004, Mitsubishi announced that it had been covering up four major defects in its automobiles for over 25 years. This announcement, combined with growing public outrage over Mitsubishi's treatment of workers in World War II and in shops around the world, further hampered sales. Still, old Mitsubishi cars, like the GTO and the Eclipse, continue to sell well to youth markets. Even as Mitsubishi sales in the United States slipped below Mazda sales, the company found a silver lining with its Lancer, Montero, and 3000 GT models. Thanks to the continuing popularity of the Lancer and a resurgence in U.S. brand interest, industry insiders believe that Mitsubishi will weather the tough brakes of the past several years. Somewhat surprisingly, Mitsubishis have sold remarkably well in the Russian Republic. The Mitsubishi Group recently announced a redoubling of its efforts to help the Mitsubishi Auto Company regain its footing as a world automotive power.
