About Nissan

The Japanese automobile company, Nissan Motor Co., was founded in 1932. For more than 16 years, Nissan also marketed cars under the brand name Datsun. Nissan used to be Japan's second most important car manufacturer--only Toyota brought in more business. However, during the 1990s, financial trouble at company headquarters combined with the rise of Honda forced Nissan into third place. The financial troubles which the firm encountered during this dark period would have been enough to dismantle an American company in similar disarray. Nissan handed over stewardship of the business to an entrepreneur named Carlos Ghosn, who became the very first Westerner to take the helm of a major Japanese auto manufacturer. Other Westerners, like Mark Fields of Mazda and Rolf Eckrodt of Mitsubishi, soon followed this lead.Ghosn introduced something called the Nissan Revival Plan, otherwise known as the NRP. Under the NRP, Nissan saw a spectacular rebound. Both the Nissan flagship models and the luxury Infiniti lines began 'flying off the shelves.' Soon came interest in other models, like the Nissan Pathfinder, Maxima and 350Z. Partly to celebrate, the company released the Nissan 180 in 2001. Due to Nissan's success, Ghosn become a national hero in Japan, and he won a Blue Ribbon Award from the Emperor in 2004.Nissan also manufactures parts and engines. Customized Nissans, such as the Skyline GTR and the TTS, have gained huge underground followings in U.S. domestic markets. However, Nissan has not as of yet sent the Skyline to U.S. distributors. Perhaps the continued success of the Infinitis will spur the corporate higher-ups to change their minds about exporting the Skyline.
