About Plymouth 1938

Plymouth is an American automobile brand marketed by the Chrysler Corporation and DaimlerChrysler from the year 1928 to 2001. It was one of the top three automobile brands for most of its lifespan. Plymouth automobiles were renowned for their stability, sturdiness, design, engineering, and affordability. The year 1938 saw Plymouth entering its tenth year in the automobile industry. The 1938 Plymouth model was marketed as 'the car that stands up best.' The 1938 Plymouth model was launched in the fall of 1937. Two series were launched the P5 and the P6; the P5 had a lesser price tag and was designated as the Business line and the P6 was more expensive class and was called the Deluxe line. All the models had 112 inches wheelbase except for the seven passenger sedans which had 132 inch wheelbases. The cars had an L-head six which displaced 201 cubic inches from a 3 1/8 inch bore and a 4,318 inch stroke. They had a 6.7:1 compression ratio and maintained 82 HP at 3,600 rpm. The automobiles were available in two packages, Economy Group 1 and Economy Group 2. The Economy Group 1 had a smaller intake manifold carburetor which reduced the engines horsepower to 65 hp at 3,000 rpm; it also included a 3.73 rear axel ratio on the Deluxe range and 3.54 on the Business variety. In addition, to the above the Economy Group 2 also incorporated a throttle stop which maintained the vehicles speed to around 45-50 mph. They also had Floating Power engine mounts, directional water cooling, full-pressure engine oil lubrication, ventilated 9 1/4-inch clutch disks, hydraulic brakes and a safety all-steel body. The 1938 Plymouth cars were fitted with a new steering system which enhanced its handling. The cars were designed with passenger safety as the key criterion and was known as 'Safety Styling'.
