About Pontiac

General Motors has produced the Pontiac marquee continuously from 1926 until today. The Pontiac logo features a Native American arrowhead--during the car's early history, some consumers called Pontiacs 'Indians.' GM intended the Pontiac to be a budget alternative to the company's upmarket Oak Land Motorcar line. The company wanted to produce something more vibrant than the typical Chevrolet but more affordable than the Oldsmobile. In 1957, Pontiac released the Bonneville model, a big car with a big vision for performance. Seven years later, in 1964, Pontiac introduced the GTO, a behemoth which held a V-8 389 cubic inch engine. The GTO became one of many 'muscle cars' on the road during the 1960s. It was a relatively compact car, but it had enough engine to really move on the highway. Three double-barreled carburetors supported the vehicle. Thanks in large part to the success the GTO, Pontiac introduced the Firebird in 1967. The Firebird had a smaller engine than the GTO, and it shared a body base with the Chevy Camaro. It was marketed as an upmarket version of sporty challengers of the day, like the Mercury Cougar, but ended up selling to a more diverse crowd. Built on what was known as an F-Body, the Firebird sold extremely well for decades.Unfortunately, GM didn't update the Firebird adequately, and consumer interest dragged. Finally, in 2002, GM discontinued the Firebird after three and a half decades of continual manufacture. One of the most famous Firebirds was the Trans Am, which first rolled out in 1969. The Firebird Trans Am contained a large V-8 engine with 400 cubic inches.
