The Porsche 944, manufactured by Porsche AG, was first seen at the Frankfurt Auto show in 1981. The can was officially introduced in 1983 and replaced its predecessor, the Porsche 92. The 944 is an entry level sports car replaced by the Porsche 968 in 1991; although the interior of the successor was similar to the Porsche 944, the wheel arches were widened in the Porsche 968. The 944 underwent quite a few changes, especially with the engine. Various models were introduced in the 944 series including the 944S, the 944 Turbo, and the 944S2. The 944 has a 2.5 L engine with 4-cylinders and can produce about 174 Horsepower. The engine is located at the front and it is a rear-wheel drive. The 944 is equipped with 5-speed manual transmission; however, the Porsche 944 also has an option of 3-speed automatic transmission. The Porsche had 'Type 951' transmission. The interiors were enhanced by instrumentation, electrical system, and driver power seat. The leather interior was optional to the purchaser of the Porsche 944. Another optional feature was the sport suspension. The third brake light was mounted near the top of the rear glass hatch. The average performance of the 944 was remarkable as it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just about 7.5 seconds, and could achieve the top speed of 227 km/h. In 1989, the displacement of the engine of the Porsche 944 was increased from 2.5 L to 2.7 L. The maker of this car, Porsche AG, was established in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche. The company manufactures automobiles; however, it is more known for its sports cars. Today, the company is located at Zuffenhausen, in Stuttgart, Germany. |
