About Road Runner 1968

The Road Runner was an automobile that made its debut in 1968. It was manufactured by the Plymouth division of the Chrysler Corporation. During the making of this car, Plymouth had envisioned a powerful muscle car that was not too hard on the pockets. Road Runner rolled out of the drawing board, doing justice to the vision. Warner Brothers was paid $ 50,000 by Chrysler, to use their 'Road Runner' cartoon character's name tag and persona for their car. They even adopted the 'beep-beep' sounding horn in the car. The Road Runner was based on Chrysler B body platform. To cut the cost drastically all the accessory items such as floor carpet, radio, air conditioning, cruise control, trim were left out, and the essential items required to perform were enhanced. This not only reduced the cost but also the weight giving the car an edge over other vehicles. The Road Runner was powered to life by a standard V8 cylinder, 383 cubic inch engine located at the front of the car. There were 2 valves per cylinder making it a total of 16 valves. The engine managed to stir up 335 horsepower and a torque of 425ft/lbs. The car was equipped with 4 gear manual transmission. There were bench seats in the back and the front. Priced a little higher than the standard Road Runner, one more version of the Road Runner was available, which came with a 426 cubic inchV8 engine that produced 425 horsepower and a torque of 490 ft/lbs. The car was available in limited colors. Later models from 1975 onwards were built on the new revamped B-body known as the Fury. In 1976, it was built on the Volare body. Due to government safety regulations, the engine was reduced to a 318 cubic inch engine that offered 150 horsepower. The Volare was discontinued in 1980, marking the end to the production of the Road Runner.
