About Saturn

Saturn is a marquee brand of General Motors which first went to manufacture in 1990. GM created Saturn as a reaction to the popularity of Japanese small cars. In retrospect, the introduction of the Saturn marquee was quite a leap of faith for GM. Unlike other GM cars, Saturns were manufactured in a single plant in Springhill, Tennessee. The first few runs churned out basically identical bodies equipped with 1.9 L I4 engines. Indeed, the differences among the SL, the SC, and the SW models were extremely subtle. Eventually models like the Saturn Vue and the Saturn SL2 joined the inventory.Saturn also introduced a unique dealership style. Customers paid the sticker price, and dealers became known as 'retailers' rather than salespeople. The public took to this unique, genuine sales approach, and Saturn customer satisfaction ranked extremely high. Environmental groups went out of their way to praise the company's manufacturing processes. That being said, Saturn's novel production, distribution, and sales strategies ran into trouble after a few years. The famous Saturn dent resistant panels afforded engineers little room to innovate and redesign. When the company introduced the 2000 L series midsize car, financial troubles arose. Saturn had to compete with other GM vehicles. After flagging sales of the 2003 ION, Saturn had to shut its doors for two weeks to clear out unwanted inventory.Recently, GM has tried to reposition Saturn as an upscale brand of family car. Saturn faces a tough battle, as Volkswagen has really cornered that market. A famous test study suggested that while consumers may review Saturns as desirable and stylish, they don't associate the Saturn brand name with upmarket inventory.
