The Suzuki SJ410 was first manufactured in 1982 as an updated version of the Suzuki LJ80, a small SUV produced in the 1960s and '70s. The SJ410 featured a larger version of the LJ80's 1.0 L straight-4 engine, capable of producing a modest 45 hp. The top speed of the first SJ410 was a paltry 68 MPH, but the vehicle was quite adept in off-road applications where speed isn't of the utmost importance. In 1984, the SJ413 was released, and both models began to grow in popularity in the United States (where neither was officially released). Due to the importing of these SUVs, Suzuki prepared an official version for the North American market. Released in 1985 as the Samurai, the SUV featured many upgrades compared to its SJ410 and SJ413 counterparts. Because the original Suzuki Samurai was designed for off-road use, Suzuki released an updated version in mid-1985 which made it suited to everyday use. Among these updates were softer suspension settings and an anti-sway bar to reduce body roll. In addition, the 1985.5 Samurai integrated a taller 5th gear which reduced engine speeds on the highway, and the cockpit was redesigned to provide additional comfort during especially long treks. In 1990, a new engine was integrated into the Samurai, though it was still only capable of producing 66 hp. This engine was used until 1995 when the Samurai was scrutinized by Consumer Reports for being quite susceptible to rolling over. That same year, the Samurai was withdrawn from the Suzuki lineup, replaced by the more powerful though less successful X90 SUV the following year. |
