About Volkswagen

The Volkswagen Auto Group is one of the world's four largest auto manufacturers and distributors. Volkswagen opened its doors in the 1930s, during the early reign of the Nazis. Hitler himself ordered modifications to the Volkswagen to make it affordable for the working man. The early cars featured good fuel efficiency, reliability, and easily repairable parts. Despite its questionable pedigree, Volkswagen emerged as a strong international company and a relatively sympathetic corporate power. Its Beetle model outlived its two nearest competitors, the Citroen and the Mini. Starting in the 1960s, both the Beetle and the VW bus developed a major cult following, partly as a result of the hippie movement that swept across the United States and Europe. The Volkswagen Beetle succeeded because it looked unlike any other car on the road and it allowed for easy modification. Moreover, unlike complicated engines which relied on water cooling, the Beetle's engine relied on simpler air cooling. In 2002, Volkswagen officially retired the 'Old Beetle' line. The last Volkswagen Beetle came off the assembly line in Puebla, Mexico--it was number 21,529,464. This storied car was dubbed 'El Rey' by the local manufacturers and sent to the Volkswagen Museum in Germany. The subsequent relaunch of the Volkswagen Beetle proved to be a huge commercial success. The company hired forward thinking advertisers to connect with the jaded Generation X consumer audience. Both lovers of the original Beetles and fans of the newly designed Beetles often meet up at VW shows in California. These shows include drag racing, raffles, and customization show-and-tells. Also popular are the Volkswagen Passat and Jetta models.
