About American Glass

Glass production dates back at least 7,000 years, to a time when Phoenicians roaming around Syria discovered that their hot cooking fires happened to melt nearby sand into a clear, sharp liquid. In addition, far before that time, Neolithic hominids employed natural glass, called obsidian, to cut meat and prepare tools. (Obsidian is the product of rapidly cooling volcanic material ejected to the surface of the earth.)Over the course of centuries, man-made glass production focused on efforts to customize, limit impurities, and strengthen materials. In the late 1800s, an American inventor named Michael Owens developed a machine which became known as the Owens Libbey Suction Blow machine. By 1920, more than 200 such American glass machines were put into use in the United States alone. In the 1920s, another American developed what became known as an individual section machine. Together with gob feeders, IS machines formed the basis for an entire glass mass-production industry. Also in the 1920s, the American Pittsburgh plate glass company developed the Pittsburgh process, which combined a novel way of drawing glass sheets with Owens's technique.American glass makers today turn out millions of tons of material for use in every conceivable application--from aerospace to skyscraper building to computer chip manufacturing. That said, old-time artisans persist in making handcrafted glass pieces for the home. While synthetic, mass-produced glass generates the most money, many American glass artisans still appreciate the ingenuity and artistic patience demanded by handblown glass.
