About Glass

Technically speaking, glass is an amorphous solid formed when a molten mixture cools rapidly into a non-crystalline mass. Many mixed mineral suites can be considered 'glass.' Erupted molten rock can cool from temperatures of 1,300° C to 20° C within seconds when ejected volcanic bombs land in water. The resulting obsidian glass is opaque, smooth, and lacking in crystal definition.Over the ages, humans have employed glass made from silicon dioxide to create transparent, electrically inert materials. Glass is primarily used as a decorator, but its impervious surface, durability, and cut-ability also make it a treasured substance. Glass blowers are artisans who create molten silica admixtures, heat them up to high temperatures, and design vases, dishware, and other ornaments.Curiously, silicon dioxide glass is actually a liquid. As glass ages, it flows downwards thanks to the pull of gravity. Since glass is an extremely viscous liquid, however, it is used practically as a solid. You can heat-treat glass, dope glass with other components, and otherwise chemically manipulate glass to make it even more viscous. That said, over the centuries, glass does flow 'downhill.' For instance, when you look at old stained-glass windows in medieval churches, you may notice that the bottoms of these windows tend to be thicker than the tops. This is because, over the centuries, the not-crystalline glass has 'flowed.' Hobbyists the world over collect glass in many incarnations. One of the most popular and ancient forms of glass is Czech glass, which was used to make famous European chandeliers.
