About Lenox

In 1889, an artisan named Walter Scott Lenox opened his own factory with just 18 employees. Unlike the cookie-cutter dinnerware factories of the day, Lenox's ceramic art company provided exquisite handmade white china. Lenox products quickly developed a reputation for being top-of-the-line, and exclusive boutiques across the nation started carrying Lenox tea sets, vases, and other wares.Only eight years after Lenox forged his company, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington displayed his handcrafted pieces. At the turn of the 20th-century, Lenox decided to capitalize on the American trend of 'fine dining at home.' He developed personalized service plates which competed with the best that European china makers had to offer. He called on the services of William Morley and other renowned artists to develop these designs. In 1928, France's National Museum of Ceramics honored Lenox. The Lenox profile grew, and the company released two legendary patterns, Mandarin and Ming, in the mid 1910s. Both patterns lasted for more than 50 years and garnered critical adulation. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson purchased an elegant Lenox tableware set for the White House--a set of more than 7,000 pieces.Since President Wilson's purchase, Lenox tableware servings have adorned White House dinner tables for more than eight decades. President Roosevelt, Reagan, and Clinton all commissioned new Lenox services for their White Houses. Collectors focus on the rarer Lenox lines, including the Wool and Autumn lines, which were produced during the late 1910s.
