About Noritake

In the late 1800s, an international entrepreneur named Baron Morimura started up a china export business to serve United States markets. This company was at first a simple retail outlet with connections in New York. However, Morimura recognized the huge potential market in the United States, and he designed a high quality factory to service this market. On the first day of 1904, Morimura established the Noppon Toki Gomei Kaisha Company. This company was located in the small town of Noritake. As the china export business grew, so did the company's international profile. The company didn't officially adopt the name Noritake Co. Ltd until 1981. However, for decades before this name change, traders colloquially referred to the company as 'Noritake.'Starting in the 1930s, Noritake expanded its market and opened a number of divisions throughout the village. The company manufactured ceramics, electronics, and flatware pieces in addition to its traditional polished china. Noritake also introduced something called the roller hearth kiln, a revolutionary mass manufacturing furnace which sped up production and allowed the company to take on new responsibilities.Noritake collectors tend to get infatuated with the company's early china exports to the United States. You can locate these pieces throughout North America. You can also find them in Japanese trade shows. Appraising these early china pieces requires skill and education in the company's history. Noritake also manufactures fine classic stoneware pieces, which generally sell for $25 to $75 per item.
