About Porcelain

The art of porcelain making has a rich tradition, dating back to ancient China. Strictly defined, porcelain is an agglomeration of clay that is fired close to 1,000 degrees Celsius, then decorated with glaze, and fired again at even higher temperatures of about approximately 1,300 degrees Celsius. The finished product is translucent white in its pure form.Porcelain is used to craft everything from pitchers and other tableware to laboratory equipment and figurines. The feldspar in the Chinese porcelain helps to seal microscopic holes in the material and to make it highly non-porous. Truly exquisite porcelain, crafted according to strict controls and protocols, is also known as 'china.' Most of the world's china comes from a single city--Jingdezhen--located in the Jiangxi Province.Glazing techniques for porcelain abound. Some glazes, such as celedons, impart a particularly colorful and striking artistic touch. Chemicals and other constituents can be added to the pure clay mixture before firing to increase certain properties, such as elasticity and durability. Traditionalists tend to dismiss chemically altered porcelain as somehow inferior, but modernists point out that the enhancements induced by chemical additives provide new and interesting artistic palates for craftsmen.Techniques for so-called biscuit firing abound as well. When the clay admixture gets fired at a lower temperature than 1,000 degrees Celsius, it actually becomes earthenware or stoneware. These formations are considered less desirable, although this so-called primitive art has earned cachet in some important circles as of late, so stoneware and earthenware may hit the market in full force soon enough.
