About Rookwood Pottery

The last style of Rookwood pottery to enter the market was known as 'ombroso.' This pottery featured deep black or brown glazing, and it was used primarily on what's known as incised pottery. Another very valuable kind of Rookwood pottery was iris. Pieces from this era displayed floral ornamentation, blues, pinks, whites, and sometimes yellows. Yet what makes iris-glazed Rookwood so valuable to collectors is its gold streaking, caused by improperly set glaze that leaches into ingredients.During the earliest Rookwood pottery era, founder Maria Nicole Storer released natural colored clay pieces to be shaped and glazed per individual tastes. Today, these kinds of purchases, also known as do-it-yourself ceramics or green-wear, are exceptionally popular. However, collectors don't typically consider green-wear Rookwood pottery from this early period to be highly valuable. It's a testament to Mary Nicole Storer and her artists and chemists that modern Rookwood pottery remains in such good condition. Unlike other ceramics designed and crafted in the 19th century, Rookwood pottery retains an amazing amount of detail. Part of its survivability has to do with the fact that it's kilned from purified china to begin with.Another reason why collectors appreciate Rookwood is that each piece tells a story. Back in the late 19th century and early 20th century, people on the move in the American West often possessed few permanent items. Rookwood ceramics were utilitarian items for many. Some pieces have actually sold for more thanks to interesting imperfections added to the pottery pieces along their journeys through history.
