About Rookwood

Rookwood pottery is known by collectors and artisans the world over for its unique glazing style and high quality of craftsmanship. Among ceramic collectors, Rookwood pieces are considered extremely valuable. The story of Rookwood began in the 1870s when an independent artisan, Maria Nichols Storer, experimented with kilning temperatures and glazing attributes in her home shop.Together with a team of chemists and top-shelf artists, Storer developed a unique way to mass-produce her work. The very earliest Rookwood pieces were natural and simple--greens, pinks, and even so-called unfinished pieces, which buyers could personally decorate. At the end of this first era, Storer and her associates decided to develop a more standardized character for the Rookwood brand. They devised a number of glazes, including a standard glaze, a matte glaze, a vellum glaze, and an iris glaze. Each glaze reflected a different kind of treatment and artistic intention. For instance, the standard glaze--an earthtone red-and-orange gloss often ornamented with flowers and counterpointed with images of stoic American Indians--depicted the flavor of the Western migration. The vellum glaze, on the other hand, was often used in pieces that highlighted landscaping. Highly experimental, prized for its collectibility, and gorgeous even to this day, Rookwood pottery never fails to create deep impressions on American artists. People pay thousands of dollars for the chance to own some of the rarer glossy Rookwood pieces.
