About Spode

Josiah Spode was a revolutionary ceramics artist who lived in the late 18th century. As a young child, Spode grew up in poverty. His father died when he was very young, but Josiah Spode persevered and became an expert craftsman. In the 1770s, he opened his own ceramics shop and quickly gained a reputation as a genius and a completely intuitive designer.Spode constantly experimented with ceramics. In 1784, he developed an intricate glazing process, called blue underglaze printing, which was used to ornament earthenware. The Spode underglazing process inspired huge innovations in English earthenware and tableware technology. Yet Josiah Spode's legendary creation was still yet to come.A few years later, he developed what we now refer to as Fine Bone China, an exquisite ceramic used in top-quality dishware. Josiah Spode didn't just invent the concept of Fine Bone China--he also perfected the form. In 1820, Spode designed his famous Imperialwear, which later became synonymous with the Christmaswear design. Spode's son, Josiah Spode II, took over from his father and continued the family tradition of superior ceramic making. In 1925, to commemorate the Spodes' amazing achievements, the Spode Museum opened in Stoke-on-Trent, England. Museum visitors can examine the Spode legacy from its humble beginnings to its present incarnation as a world leader in handmade ceramics. Over the years, as designers like W. T. Copeland and Garrett added creative ideas and business savvy, Spode has grown to become a brand-name recognized the world over.
