The National Hot Rod Association, or the NHRA, recognizes the Pro Stock Bike as an appropriate class of dragsters. Typical dragbikes have no rear suspension, but have a telescopic fork on the front end that aids in stability. These five-speed bikes have an air shifter that is mounted on the handlebar. This air shifter switches gears with the touch of a button by powering the transmission into the next gear. An onboard race pack gives the driver all of the necessary information on the dragbike, including the wheel speed, the temperature of the exhaust gas, and the engine's rotations per minute. All of this information helps keep the driver in control of the bike, helping them understand how it handles and alerting the driver when something is wrong. Most of the NHRA dragbikes have at least a 300 horsepower, 1,500cc Suzuki engine. These powerful engines are capable of producing very fast speeds. An engine like this can move a dragbike from zero to 60 miles per hour in one second, and from zero to 100 miles per hour in two seconds. Dragbike racers take safety seriously when they are riding at such fast speeds. To help stay safe, the racers will wear a helmet, a full-body leather suit, gloves, and heavy-duty boots. The leather body-suits usually have a sturdy, plastic piece installed in the back to help protect a rider's spine in case of a fall. |
