Go-karts are basic four-wheel vehicles that are used for sport or recreation, or 'karting,' as go-kart enthusiasts call it. The basis of the go-kart design is a four-wheeled cart with no suspension or differential. The cart is maneuvered using the flexible chassis.

Some go-karts, namely hobby carts, are propelled by gravity. Go-karts intended to race contain a small engine that runs on either gasoline or electricity. Recreational racing go-karts have no differential so they operate on a fixed gear, which limits their top speeds. Professional go-carts will often have a six-speed manual transmission so that they can go faster.

Other Sports Vehicles
Dune buggies are another type of four-wheel vehicle intended for recreation or racing. The dune buggy has large wheels and an open chassis, making it perfect for climbing up and racing down dunes in the desert or on the beach. Dune buggies might be made from the chassis of a pre-existing vehicle, maybe a car. Dune buggies may also be constructed from steel tubing that is welded together. These types of dune buggies are called sand rails and look a little like a cage on big, rubber wheels.

Although they're fun, dune buggies, go-karts and ATVs should all be treated with a serious degree of respect. These extreme vehicles all carry a decent amount of power that can result in broken bones or head injuries. In severe cases, a lapse in judgment could be fatal. Children should be watched closely when using these vehicles. ATV training courses are strongly recommended for riders of all ages.
