Mercury has been designing powerful and innovative engines and parts for racing and recreational watercrafts for more than 60 years. The company began as a small outboard motor manufacturing company in Wisconsin and has evolved into one of the world's leading manufacturers of marine equipment. During the early years, founder Carl Kiekhaefer conducted tests at a secret location in Florida, referring to as 'Lake X.' After extensive testing and research, Mercury introduced the first 60 horsepower engine, the Mark 75.

In 1961 Mercury founder Carl Kiekhaefer merged forces with the Brunswick Corporation. That same year, the first Mercruiser engine was introduced at the Chicago Boat Show. The engine immediately dominated up to 80 percent of the market for stern drives. During that same time Kiekhaefer introduced the first 100 and 125 horsepower outboard engines.
