About Bahamas

The Bahamas is an island country east of Florida and Cuba in the Atlantic Ocean, covering some 100,000 square miles. This independent nation has a population of about 300,000. There are around 700 islands and islets that comprise this vacation paradise, 30 of which are populated. The largest city is Nassau on the New Providence Island. New Providence has almost 70 percent of the total population of the Bahamas at just over 200,000 residents. The islands are composed mainly of limestone and coral, and they are recognized as the world's third longest barrier reef. Industries in the Bahamas include tourism, e-commerce, banking, oil refining, cement production, pharmaceuticals, salt, steel pipe, and aragonite. The majority of the labor force is involved in the tourism industry in one way or another. Grand Bahama Island, the fourth largest island in the Bahamas and located a mere 52 miles from the east coast of Florida, is known for exceptional outdoor land and water activities--snorkeling, fishing, bicycling, kayaking, fishing, and golfing. One of the highlights of the Grand Bahama Island is Lucayan National Park. This park is famous for the longest underground freshwater cave system. The six miles of caves are inhabited by mosquito fish, shrimp, freshwater eels, and fruit bats. This 40-acre preserve encompasses the island's five varied ecosystems--whiteland coppice, pine forests, mangrove swamps, sand dunes, and rocky coppice. The islands of the Bahamas have a wide variety of plant life--more than 1,370 species. There are 13 species of mammals: bats, donkeys, wild pigs, raccoons, and wild horses, to name a few. Humpback and blue whales and the spotted dolphin always attract an audience of both tourists and residents.
