About Houses

Houses come in all shapes, sizes, colors and designs, depending on the taste and capabilities of their builders. Architects generally group them into three different categories. A house standing on its own (that is, not touching any adjacent buildings), is called a 'detached house.' Houses sharing one or more wall with another building are called 'shared houses.' Houses set up in long, multi-unit terraces are called rowhouses. For those people living in tightly-packed cities, a house may be an unheard of luxury. For people in less-populated suburban or rural environments, however, houses are common. Detached houses are the backbone of almost any major non-metropolitan area. Their range and variety, of course, depend a lot on the area that they're in--but for the most part, it's rare to find houses that look exactly alike. In areas where financial or special considerations weigh more heavily on residents, shared or row houses may be more affordable than detached houses. A good example of this is a planned community, in which dozens and oftentimes even hundreds of buildings have been designed and built in relatively close quarters, with each unit sharing sometimes two or even three of its sides with another building. These condominiums are often attractive to the elderly, vacationers, or people who aren't looking for the hassle and worries of a stand-alone house.Houses can be made out of almost anything. Some popular building materials include wood, brick, and cordwood. Each of these materials comes with its own benefits and deficiencies. Brick, concrete, and stone houses, for example, tend to stay cool in the summer, but can have a hard time keeping heat in during the winter months.
