About Cycling Apparel

Choosing the appropriate cycling apparel can mean the difference between a great ride and an uncomfortable one. In many ways, well-fitted cycling apparel is equally as important to your technique as a well-fitted bike. Of course, depending on where you live, you may need different apparel for different seasons. Here are some guidelines for choosing cycling apparel. For cool weather, choose comfortable stretch cycling shorts that have few seams and a tight fit. To keep from feeling wet and cold, choose a wicking fabric that pulls moisture away from you. Wear a breathable long-sleeved shirt that is made of comfortable fabric. This will be a good base next to your skin as you add layers. Avoid cotton. It has no wicking properties, so it will leave you wet and cold and can chafe against the skin. Wear a heavier, warmer shirt over your base layer, and a zippered parka that you can adjust for temperature control. The parka should have a front zipper, as well as arm zippers. A pair of full-fingered, insulated gloves will keep your fingers from getting cold. Special waterproof booties can be purchased to wear over you bike shoes. They will keep your feet warm and dry. In the warmer weather, substitute racing shorts for tights, and wear a breathable, short sleeve shirt or biking jersey. In moderate weather, choose a windbreaker instead of a parka. For all seasons, make sure that you wear bright colors so that you can be seen on the road, and always keep a water bottle on hand to stay hydrated.
