Since Gary Fisher started his bicycle racing career, he's been known as the outlaw of the sport. In the 1960s, Gary was suspended from competition in road and track races due to his long hair. Today, Gary's flair for the unconventional remains, and he's often seen sporting flashy suits, gaudy sunglasses, and a soul patch on his chin. Superficialities aside, Gary Fisher has had quite an influence on the sport of cycling. Motivated by a bicycle built by Russ Mahon, Gary began work on what would become the prototype for the modern off-road bicycle. By using parts from discarded bikes and motorcycles, Gary Fisher created a Frankenstein-like bicycle able to traverse off-road terrain and stop while careening down a mountainside. Realizing he was onto something special, Gary and a friend created the MountainBikes company to produce these off-road bicycles. Roughly four years later, the company disbanded. Never one to be discouraged, Gary created Fisher MountainBikes the same year, which grew to be quite successful. In 1993, Trek purchased the company, and today Gary remains an integral part of development, marketing, and talent-scouting for the company's racing team. If your favorite local bike shop doesn't stock Gary Fisher bikes and accessories, it's possible to find them online. At eBay, you can view a wide variety of complete BMX, road, and mountain bikes, along with bare frames and accessories like jerseys, stickers, and water bottle holders. By shopping online, you can streamline the selection process so you can spend more time riding and less time indoors. |
