Racquetball, incorporating the rules from squash and handball, is played with racquets and a hollow rubber ball on an indoor or outdoor court. The walls, floor, and even the ceiling of the racquetball court are considered in-bounds. Usually played by two players, the game can also be played by three or even four players. Compared to squash, the racquets and the ball used in racquetball are larger. A racquetball racquet, like most other racquets consists on a hand-held frame with an open hoop where a network of cord is stretched across, which is used for striking the ball. The frame was originally made of wood and the strings of catgut. Wood is still used for traditional tennis racquets that are still made today. However, most racquets are now made of synthetic materials such as carbon fiber, ceramics, or alloys. Catgut has almost been completely replaced by synthetic materials such as nylon. With advances in technology and the player's preference, handles for racquets have special firm grips. This addition can be bought separately depending on the player's choice. Typically a racquet should measure approximately 107 square inches and 22 inches in length. Depending on the nylon cord, racquetball racquets usually weigh 160 grams unstrung, and 200 grams strung. Amongst other brands that manufacture racquetball racquets, Wilson, E-Force, Ektelon, Head, and Pro Kennex. Racquetball racquets are made both for amateur and professional players, and are sometimes customized for certain individuals. |
