Remington was established in 1816 when Eliphalet Remington II thought he could build a better gun than the ones currently available in the markets. He then started designing and making the Flintlock rifle. In 1828, he moved his workshop to Ilion, New York which is still in use today. In 1912, Remington and the Union Metallic Cartridge Company merged into a single entity, Remington UMC. Till date, the company produces the U.M.C. brand of ammunitions. In 1915, the plant at Ilion was expanded, and it is still basically the same plant that currently exists at the site. Remington is the oldest U.S. company to continue manufacturing the same product at the same site. The Remington 1100 was an auto loading (semi-automatic) shotgun, first announced in 1963. The weapon was available in about ten modifications. It became popular for different activities such as hunting, sporting, self defense, and police use. It offered great versatility and fire power. The gas-operated auto loading action increased the rate of fire and decreased the recoil. The Remington 1100, a magazine-fed shotgun, was designed on the basis of the Remington 870.The only difference between the two was that the 1100 was gas operated while the 870 had a pump-action sliding forearm. In the 1100, the gas cylinder was placed near the front part of the magazine tube. Two action bars linked an annular gas piston. Barrel locking was done by the single locking piece. Once unlocked and fired, the bolt was retracted by the gas drive that ejected the empty case while a fresh cartridge was fed from the magazine tube. This model could be fitted with different types of sights, such as the shotgun bead type or the rifle-type; different stocks were made from either wood or plastic. Various accessories, such as laser aiming devices and scope mounts, were also available. |
