Softball is a direct descendant of baseball, also known as hardball, which is commonly used to set apart the two. Apart from baseball, there are two different variations to softball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball. Unlike baseball, the ball used in softball is eleven to twelve inches in circumference. Even though the ball sizes are different, the two sports follow most of the same rules and regulations. Along with the size of the ball, an obvious difference between the two sports is in baseball there are nine players on the field, while in softball there are ten including an extra outfielder. Another important difference is the bat types and sizes. While in both fast-pitch softball and slow-pitch softball the bat size can be no longer than 34 inches, in baseball it extends up to 42 inches. To go along with the slower pitch, there are many custom made bats made especially for dominance and make offense more important. Bats used by the batter are made from metal, hardwood, and from several materials that are pre-approved by the various governing bodies. In addition to the length requirement, softball bats can not exceed a weight of 38 oz. and may be no more than 6 cm in diameter. Depending on the player's preference and whether the player is an amateur or a professional, various bats are available to suit their requirements. A bat used by coaches during practice and warm-up is called a 'fungo'. These bats are deigned not to hit thrown or pitched balls, but rather for balls that are tossed in the air. A fungo bat ensures the maximum amount of balls hit repeatedly with accuracy. Softball bat manufacturers, depending on fast-pitch or slow-pitch softball, design bats that provide maximum distance, accuracy, whilst abiding by the sport's regulations.. Amongst others, few of the most popular and well-known bat manufacturers such as DeMarini, Easton, TPS, and Mizuno provide both amateur and professional softball and baseball players with exceptional and powerful bats. |
